History in the making

October 15th at 4:15 PM, perinatal mental health history was made as H.R. 20, The Melanie Blocker Stokes Postpartum Depression Research and Care Act, was passed in the House of Representatives by a vote of 382 - 3!! What a thrill it was to watch from the Congressional Gallery as Congressman Bobby L. Rush made his final, victorious push for American women, children and families.

This has been the result of SEVEN YEARS of steadfast advocacy. The bill will now proceed to the Senate where it will join forces with The MOTHERS Act.

On October 24, I'll be posting a special blog here and on LAB with numbers and e-mail contacts to call or write our local senators to make sure they know we are interested in seeing this bill pass. I know I sure am. I would be thrilled to request some grant $$ to help fund LAB, and would love to see more research being done, more screening and more help for perinatal mood disorders.

It is more than good. It is amazing. And a big thank you to Brooke Shields for lending her star-power--she's been to Congress twice to help present this. Wonder if she'll personally walk it into the big house as well!?!
