career guicance

Dan and I were talking last night about me going back to work. He said "what would you do?". For someone who usually has all the answers, or is good at making them up, I was dumbfounded. I have no idea.

So I am turning to you for career advice. What do you think would be a good "fit" for me--something I would enjoy and utilize my skillz.

If you can't think of anything, just take the opportunity to openly compliment me on all the zillions of things I am really good at--100 words minimum, please!

The limit is difficult...but let's see how I do.

You are wordy, in a good way. Never at a lack for what to say or how to say it.

Creative in so many venues, from updating your kids' clothes, to fabulous menus to clever decor for your home, you can improvise spectacularly and also create new things out of nothing!

Cute. Is cute a talent? I don't know for sure...

Great mom. You treat your kids with respect and kindness. Someday I will be sure to ask your advice.

So, put all this into a computer job-finder program and you come out with:

Ah, nuts. It crashed in the middle of running the program. Sorry about that...

anne took a lot of my good ones...

you are great with words - and intuitive about people. the combo of this is hard to come by. you'd make a great manager/leader.

and you are extremely creative, too - although that doesn't necessarily have to fit into your job description...though it would be nice.

ever think about teaching again? i bet you were great at that.

what's your main goal in going back to work? to make extra money? interact with adults? use your skillz [that may or may not be buried right now]?

i'd think it might be helpful to determine a purpose to entering the job market again...

Heather--you hit a lot of my reasons for going back to the work world--definitely missing adults, feeling like anything I was good at in my former life will atrophy into nothingness and the only thing I'll be qualified for in the future is child care, which scares the hell outta me. Don't want to lose all the social security credits I've built up, and totally enjoy an environment in which I can shine, use my abilities, be affirmed, and be away from my family and home so that I appreciate coming home to them both. Some extra money would be nice, but we have what we need, so it's not a dominating issue. Seems like GR is flooded with teachers and I felt "trapped" in the classroom, so probably wouldn't do that fulltime again. Plus bulletin boards...shiver, shiver.

I'm intrigued by the idea of buried skillz. Please unpack that term for me and elaborate!

What about a sewing place? Either a quilt shop (do they still have those?) or a place where they teach sewing and you could teach your skilz. You've done quite the array of sewing from curtains to beanie bags to pillow covers to outfits to, do I need to go on? I will if need be.

Another idea that came to my brain while walking up the stairs is the library. I know that's in your blood from your mom. :) And you can say SHHHHHH as much as you want.

Or what about one of the grocery stores that teaches cooking classes? Some how get involved in that? I know Forest Hills Foods has a cooking class. Or maybe the culinary school at CC? Or a consultant of some type to all of the "make a bunch of dinners to take home and freeze" businesses out there and offer them different recipes along with demonstrations...

Those were the ones that jumped out in my brain. :)
